"Night Patrol" is about to hit theaters soon and Jermaine Fowler is here as Xavier Carr to make sure that we feel safe. "Night Patrol" unveils a gory journey through battles of good and evil. The film is set in modern-day Los Angeles, where a sub-division of the police, Night Patrol becomes Compton’s worst enemy.
From the opening scene, we are thrust into chaos. The film introduces us to the "darkest" patrol team, Night Patrol in the aftermath of the murder of the girlfriend of Crip member Xavier Carr’s brother, Wazi Carr. This tragedy sets off a chain of events that pulls Xavier into a moral war far more complicated than any badge or uniform could prepare him for.
Fowler and I shared a virtual moment discussing some of the juicy details about Xavier's journey to protect and serve. As a cop who works during the day, his service to his community is simple and the streets feel safe. However, what starts as routine duty turns personal and perilous when Night Patrol forces Xavier into an impossible position: bringing his own brother into custody as Wazi becomes the main suspect in their case. Morally, Xavier quickly moves from his day shift to the darkest hour.
Me: What type of cop do you think he is? What type of cop can we see him be?
Fowler: The type of cop he is...is not the type of cop that he thinks he is. It's strange because as much he wants to remove himself from his of past gang life by covering up his tattoos, trying to forget his mom, his family and his roots...The more that it comes into play is his anxiety to search for a community or home or promotion in his department.
Me: He seems disconnected. He feels like this is "what I signed up to do". "This is what I'm
going to do without losing sight of myself". We see a scene where Xavier has to choose. He has to choose between his family and his career. What goes through his head in this moment?
Fowler: He makes a choice. There's choice that the audience sees and there's a choice that (I believe) X, (had) - was a plan that he was intending to execute. I think ultimately he loves
his brother. (He's) still trying to work out issues with his mom, but ultimately wanting his brother to be safe. I think his plan was different in his head. As we saw in the initial introduction to the film he has a very chaotic way of executing these sort of ideas. We see a very opportunistic, selfish: man, brother, son, - whatever you want to call him, but I think in reality he was working on something, but before that can be sort of be executed, he has a pre-mature ending.
Xavier's ending might have come early, but that doesn't mean that the movie ends there. Now, I don't want to spoil everything, so be sure to check out NIGHT PATROL in theaters on January 16th. Who knows...you may be able to share your own moment with Jermaine in a lobby near you.
