Nina Simone once said "it's a new dawn, a new day, a new life for me, and I'm feeling good" and that is how the energy in New York City (NYC) feels right now. With lights flashing brighter than usual and communities reforming, New York City's soul is back.
Our new mayor, Zohran Mamdani is a physical embodiment of both the past of New York City and the future. Equipped with a sincere spirit, passion for equal rights and knowledge of the diversity of everyone's "favorite" city, he will do New York City justice.
This summer, I had the pleasure of hearing Mamdani speak at the Anees (musician) "Homesick" tour stop at Irving Plaza in Manhattan. He spoke of a future of reform that included the power in community, expression and affordable living conditions for all New Yorkers. Although that was the first space that I heard him speak, it wasn't the last. Mamdani spoke to all of us using social media platforms; his campaign was sincere, engaging and for the people.
As one of the "people" and a native New Yorker, I'm thrilled to see our city have a legilative voice that may represent our deepest desires to live authentically and have access to stable living conditions where we can commune amongst our peers without discrimination and predjudice. Mamdani seems like he is ready and eager to take action while understanding that he cannot do it alone. With his "team-like" mindset, I think the city will be in good hands because of the input of us, his "teammates".
Like many New Yorkers., I'm ready for New York City's best moments to make a come back.
