KIRBY: THE VOICE THAT BRINGS GRACE TO MARVEL'S "SPIDER-NOIR"

There's a new addition to the Marvel Universe, and it's Spider-Noir. The Prime Original series is a live-action drama that tells the story of an experienced private investigator, Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), who has been down on his luck in life. Ben undergoes a personal identity crisis after a tragedy deters him from being New York's one and only "superhero."

The series has an old-fashioned 1930s feel that takes us back to our love for black-and-white film; think old Hollywood glamour meets powerful rebirth. Kirby brings her classic Mississippi-deep, rich, soulful voice to the original song, "Saving Grace," written by Kris Bowers and Michael Dean Parsons. Kirby's voice guides us on a timeless, classic journey that helps us navigate Ben's.

Kirby sat down with me and discussed the creative process behind performing "Saving Grace," which may be her biggest moment yet! She shared that she doesn't usually perform songs she didn't write; however, she was able to identify with the story. "Take away the fact that you would do the TV show and really just be married to the song," she explained.

After one listen to "Saving Grace," I felt a little glimmer of hope and that's what we need in the world right now. Whether Spider-Noir is fiction or not, the feeling in Kirby's voice isn't. Through every lyric, I felt saved. While this was her first time performing someone else's words, she made them her own. This type of personal ownership can inspire many creatives. It is a creative process that encourages artists to step outside of their comfort zones and create in a different way.

The soundtrack is just the tip of the iceberg for Kirby, but a perfect segway into this new brand from the "spider universe"; her voice guided us right into Ben's journey. That beautiful, melodic, authentic sound gave the song a deeply personal feel. By trusting the creative process and embracing unfamiliar territory, she delivered a performance that showcased both her versatility and artistic growth.

You can listen to "Saving Grace" in the Spider-Noir series, currently streaming exclusively on Prime.
